COSTEP Expanding services to help more people

Letter from Patricia Beard, President COSTEP

Many of you are probably familiar with the saying College, just a COSTEP away. The reality is COSTEP assisted thousands of students with student loans, who otherwise may have never gone to college. In 2010, the US Government became the only student loan lender and COSTEP transitioned to servicing student loans on a fulltime basis. Helping students find a pathway to college was a great benefit to our community. To continue helping the people in our community to prosper and flourish, COSTEP has undertaken another challenge by helping students, parents, and adults find their path to financial confidence through financial literacy.

COSTEP will continue servicing student loans and in addition foster financial literacy programs. The way that COSTEP will approach financial literacy will be distinctively different from others. COSTEP’s objective is to create programs for financial literacy in both English and Spanish using everyday terms, not just lender speak.

Our programs are designed for people at different stages of their lives, to help you make decisions that are best for you and your family now and moving forward into the future. COSTEP will instruct and counsel individuals and groups on a variety of topics and subject matter. Please take the opportunity to review one of our videos to see our approach.

Thank you in advance,
Patricia Beard

About COSTEP

costep-about-1The Council for South Texas Economic Progress (COSTEP) was founded in 1972 by the late U.S. Senator and Secretary of Treasury Lloyd Bentsen, Jr., and other South Texas political and community leaders. Each sharing a deep concern for the economy of the region and agreeing that the best way to impact the area’s future is through education and moreover educating people in community about financial literacy. COSTEP, a non-profit organization, is an ideal partner providing financial literacy assistance and information to people of all ages at different stages of life.

COSTEP is your path to financial confidence and offers counseling services that address a broad financial literacy landscape. Our goal is to help you check if your credit is healthy, and guide you to get your credit back on track. What you learn with COSTEP will give you the confidence to make better informed financial decisions.

COSTEP wants to bridge the communication gap in financial literacy by speaking in terms that people can understand. Our website and financial literacy information uses everyday language to define the banking terms that we all should know and need to know.

We help people with planning, understanding credit, credit scores, and how credit works to help keep your credit score up. Example: If you have a credit card, did you know that it’s better to keep the card at around 30% of your credit line and not max out your card?

COSTEP’S counselors are certified by the National Association of Certified Credit Counselors. The National Association of Certified Counselors believes that in order to effectively counsel and serve clients, it is necessary to consistently increase, update, and maintain professional skills and knowledge through continuing education.

Certification gives you the confidence that you are working with a person who is not only qualified but has earned the right to be called a certified credit counselor through a nationally recognized, independent, third party organization.

So what is the key difference between COSTEP and other financial literacy programs? Call us to schedule an appointment and experience the difference for yourself.
